In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may better your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a superb protein source.

  3. Get 80 g sugar
  4. Use 1 Tbsp chocolate liqueur
  5. Provide 40 g walnuts, roughly chopped
  6. Take 60 g bitter chocolate
  7. Provide 200 g flour
  8. You need 1 tsp baking powder
Instructions to make Chocolate Muffins:
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F. Put the margarine into a bowl with sugar and mix together well.
  2. Add beaten eggs slowly and mix very well, then add the chocolate liqueur, the roughly chopped walnuts and chocolate to the mix.
  3. Sift the flour and baking powder, add them into a bowl, and mix roughly - a powdery texture is ok.
  4. Spread olive oil or margarine on the inside of the cupcake pan, or use silicon cups. Then pour in the mixture to half way up each cupcake cup to avoid over filling. Bake for 15 minutes and remove to a cooling rack - the muffins are best eaten warm. If completely cooled, heat in microwave for about 30 seconds. These are super yummy with vanilla ice cream.
  5. Note: I use GODIVA's for the chocolate liqueur.
