Why don’t we begin with something quite simple, changing the actual light bulbs. Complete this for the whole house, not only the kitchen. The usual light bulbs are the incandescent style, which should be replaced with compact fluorescent lightbulbs, which save energy. These bulbs are generally energy-efficient which means electricity consumption is lower, and, although they cost a bit more to buy, will outlast an incandescent light ten times over. One of the extras is that for every one of these lightbulbs used, it means that approximately ten normal lightbulbs less will probably end up at a landfill site. You also have to acquire the routine of turning off the lights when there is nobody in a area. In the kitchen is where you’ll regularly discover members of a family, and often the lights may not be turned off until the last person goes to bed. Of course this also happens in different rooms, not just the kitchen. Do an exercise if you like; have a look at the quantity of electricity you can save by turning the lights off as soon as you don’t need them.
As you can see, there are plenty of little elements that you can do to save energy, and also save money, in the kitchen alone. It is quite easy to live green, of course. Mostly, all it will take is a little bit of common sense.
